The photo exhibition "Shadows of Empire" by Mary Frances Lindstrom, the Open Society Institute’s East-East: Partnership Beyond Borders Program Director, contains 34 black and white photographs taken in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Mongolia over the past 20 years.

Highlighting the long and deep shadows cast by the Soviet empire, the exhibition explores diverse aspects of borders and identity, the influences of physical and mental borders on the determination and definitions of individual and collective identity, and how individual human fate is shaped by changing borders and perceptions of identity.
