The mentoring program is a pilot project for individual Estonian language learning, initiated by the Open Estonia Foundation, Integration Foundation, British Council and the Ministry of Education and Research. The aim of the project is to support the teachers of Russian-language schools in their efforts to learn Estonian and prepare the teachers for the gradual transfer to bilingual instruction at schools, which will be finalized in the academic year 2011/2012.
Mentoring as a method of individual learning enables teachers to develop their language skills according to their needs, possibilities and interests, provides support in overcoming internal communication barriers and helps create new contacts between the teachers of Estonian-language and Russian-language schools in Estonia.
In September 2009, 51 teachers/mentees were paired up with 39 mentors to work together until September 2010. The project also includes many workshops and seminars where the participating pairs can share their experience and learn from each other's success.
